The Rulon Warriors Battle Pack was released in early 2021 by Mattel and was the first
time that an official Dino-Riders toy would be released since the vintage line ended
in 1990. This battle pack was essentially released out of the blue as a one-off,
as it was disappointingly not part of a broader re-launch of a new toy line. Originally
released as an exclusive to the online retailer, Entertainment Earth, this set contained
highly stylized miniature figures akin to tabletop games. It also contains new box
art that is reminiscent of the original Series 2 battle scene but with a decidedly
more anime look to it, and the box mimics the “window” front of the original toys
but is not actually functional. The set is unique in that it contains both Rulons
and Dino-Riders dinosaurs and figures, despite oddly being called a “Rulon Warriors
Battle Pack.” Despite being very small, the pieces are highly detailed but are unpainted,
with the Rulons being cast in a solid purple color plastic and the Dino-Riders being
cast in a sold green color plastic. No instructions or inserts of any kind were included
in the box – just a simple plastic inner tray to hold the toys. Ultimately, the product
seemed rush with typos appearing on the box (references on the box to “Tyrannasaurus
Rex” and “Saurolophus” despite the toy and box art clearly depicting a Parasaurolophus)
and with unexplainable deviations from the traditional Dino-Riders canon (including
references to a character named “Cytro” that never appeared in original Dino-Riders
line and the fact that some of the Dino-Riders dinosaurs wear brain boxes and some
of the Rulon dinosaurs don’t). Still, given that over 30 years had passed without
an official Dino-Riders toy release, the set was a nice little addition, not to mention
a decent value proposition at $20 with 20 pieces included.
